Government Urged to Resolve Threats to Bugoma Forest Reserve

Today, IGEN has joined the Save Bugoma Forest Campaign (SBFC) in issuing a press statement to commemorate the International Day for Biological Diversity under the theme, “Acting Locally for Global Impact.”

The joint press statement underscores the urgent need to strengthen conservation efforts and urges the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and other relevant government agencies to address the unresolved challenges threatening the conservation of Bugoma Central Forest Reserve.

In light of the above, SBFC and IGEN-EA call on UWA to implement the following measures:

  • Engage Uganda Land Commission (ULC) to publicly release Bugoma forest’s cadastral maps as they stood at 1944;

  •  Engage the Ministry of Lands to publicly release Bugoma forest boundary opening reports from the November 2021 and February 2022 activities;

  • Ensure full restoration of degraded areas and removal of illegal encroachers including HSL, MZ Agencies and communities from the forest; and

  • Strengthen community participation in conservation and tourism activities among others.
